Who can become a Swedish citizen?

To become a Swedish citizen (bli svensk medborgare) you normally need to prove your identity, be 18 or older, hold a permanent residence permit or right of residence, have lived in Sweden for a certain number of years, and have led an orderly life.

Residence requirement

Most adults need at least five years of continuous residence in Sweden before applying. Shorter periods can apply for citizens of the Nordic countries, stateless people, and spouses or partners of Swedish citizens.

Identity

You must be able to prove who you are. A valid passport is the most common way, but Migrationsverket accepts other documents in specific situations.

Orderly life

Serious debts to the Enforcement Authority (Kronofogden) or criminal convictions can delay Swedish citizenship. This is called the requirement of an orderly life (skötsamt liv).

Language and citizenship test (from 2026)

From 2026, applicants will also need to pass a Swedish language test and the new Swedish citizenship test (medborgarskapsprovet). The test is based on the official syllabus Sverige i fokus and covers democracy, history, rights, and everyday life. Practice all 13 chapters for free on svenskpass.

Dual citizenship

Sweden allows dual citizenship, so you usually do not have to give up your existing citizenship when you become Swedish. Check with the authorities in your other country of citizenship, since not every country allows this.
