What to expect on the Swedish citizenship test

Sweden is introducing its first citizenship test — the medborgarskapsprovet — in 2026. Here is what we know so far, and how svenskpass helps you prepare calmly.

What is the Swedish citizenship test?

The medborgarskapsprov is a new test that will form part of the Swedish citizenship application process for many adults. It is designed to check that applicants understand Swedish society, history, democracy, and everyday life. The official syllabus is the book Sverige i fokus, published by UHR and Migrationsverket.

Who has to take it?

The test is expected to apply to most adults applying for Swedish citizenship. Exemptions may apply to certain age groups or people with documented conditions. The final rules are set by Migrationsverket.
