Sweden's 2026 citizenship test — requirements & timeline
Sweden is introducing its first-ever citizenship test — the medborgarskapsprov — as part of a wider reform of the citizenship rules. This guide summarises what is publicly known: who it applies to, what it covers, and when it takes effect.
When does it start?
The Swedish government has announced that the new citizenship test will be introduced in 2026. It is being rolled out alongside changes to residency and language requirements for citizenship.
Who has to take it?
The test will apply to most adults applying for Swedish citizenship. Certain groups — for example applicants under a specific age, or people with documented conditions that make a standard test unsuitable — are expected to be exempt. The final scope is set by Migrationsverket.
What material does it cover?
